I do this routinely.

What file format did you use to save your document? if you use Word at work, I hope that you saved as a Word document and not as an OOo document.

What was the error?

You must save as a document type that Word can open (if you are using Word at work). I have both at work.

Open the odt file and use File | Save As.
Look for the drop down near the bottom of the dialog labeled "File Type".
Select the Word 97 file type.
You probably also want to check "Automatic filename extension" if it is not already checked.

Does this help?

Thank you for the help. I can't see my OOo till I get home. Just to check.
Create on linux save as a .DOC file, then I should be able to view them at work. Is that correct.

In the long run, for reasons which should be abundantly clear to you at this point, you will benefit from having OpenOffice installed at work, if at all possible. Even though you would use MS Office for routine business, you will have little emergencies like this one often enough to make it worth installing OOo alongside. If your employer has a policy against installing "unauthorized" software, see if you can get OOo added to the list. If that's not possible, there are configurations of OOo that can run from a CD or thumb drive, at a moderate performance penalty, without needing to be installed--assuming of course that such is permitted.
You can get the standard OOo for Windows free from the internet, or on CD at a small fee.

What about the im- and export filter which are recently developed by Microsoft and some others. This might be in future a good option I think. Not everybody can install huge software on the machines at work.

I'm not clear here. Are you saying that you cannot install (that is, company policy) or that you just cannot download because of your connections?

If it is the latter, one solution is to download OOo on another machine (home??) and burn the intallation package to a CD or save it on a USB stick. Then just take that to work and install OOo.
