I've been using Open Office for over a year to create text documents and spreadsheets, and it has worked perfectly. Recently, every time I try to open a document I have created using Open Office or try to run the text or spreadsheet program to create a new document, I get a window called Filter Selection, offering a batch of options. This did not happen before. I can't get past this window to open a document or one of the suite of Open Office programs, so I am blocked from accessing existing files and can't create new ones. How can I get back to my previous situation so I can access the Open Office documents I have previously created and create new ones?

It's possible that there is something awry with your "user directory". That includes all the customising you've done and any macros you've imported.

You could try renaming that directory after exiting OpenOffice. When you relaunch the software, it will create a new user directory.

If that doesn't fix the problem, you could try reinstalling.

What type of document is it? I ask because this always happens if someone tries to open a pdf file in OpenOffice.org and it will not read .pdf files.

1. What is the document type?

2. What is the document name? I am primarily interested in the file extension.

If you can create a small document that has the problem, can you post a link to the document, or send it to me by email (andrew@pitonyak.org) and I will attempt to open it to see if I have the same problem.

I'm having this problem using OOo's native .odt format. Removing ~/.openoffice.org2 does not correct the problem.cure hair loss

Can someone help me? I have been using OO (version unknown) for about a year with no problems at all. Suddenly I have a major problem. I cannot open any files, either spreadsheeets or docs. I get the same screen mentioned alsewhere asking me to specify some sort of filter. What ever I clink on makes no difference, the file won't open.

I have a couple of very important files that I cannot access. I have uninstalled and reinstalled OO, but it has not helped. I sort of a computer newbie; I need help! Thanks

Addendum to my previous post about opening files difficulty:

1. Now I am not able to open the program itself.

2. I am using version 1.1.

3. Would it help to download current version?
