|
|
I'm relatively new to Open Office. I've read a number of posts concerning this subject but cannot find a solution that works for me.
I have English (Australian) set as my default language in Tools/Options/Language Settings/Lanuages. In Tools/Options/Language Settings/Writing Aids, I have all of the boxes checked under 'Available Language Modules', and User Defined Dictionaries. Should the Ignore AllList be checked? How does one uncheck this if required?
And what about the Options section? I have the 1st, 2nd, 4th & 5th boxes checked.
Now for my problem, when I click on the manual ABC check in the document title bar, it goes through the document, but always shows no spelling errors even when I intentionly have created an error. The ABC box with the red squiggly line under it seems to be active when I clik on it, but it too does not correct misspelled words.
What am I missing? _________________ Don Barton |

Languages for which dictionaries are installed have the spellchheck icon alongside in the language settings/languages list.... Use File>Wizards>Install ... to do the install. |

What is the language set in the Font tab of your text style ? right click in the text, then Characters... _________________ Now on the EN user community forum |

OK, thanks to add [Solved] in your first post title and don't forget to search the forum (with the option Search for all terms) before posting. This issue is the most frequent here. _________________ Now on the EN user community forum |

I still wonder why it is not set as default. There is a thread about it in section about site feedback. _________________ Now on the EN user community forum |

<rant>Please forgive my bluntness here.
Don Barton's question should not have arisen. I have been using Open Office for years and every time I upgrade to another point release, I find myself without a proper spelling dictionary in the variant of english that I use. Instead, the spellcheck dialog box flashes up a meaningless message and disappears.
I then have to remember that, to get the Australian dictionary working again, I have to use the obscure "wizard" found down three levels of menu and pull the appropriate local dictionary down from the net.
At the very least Open Office should remember such preferences as it does with the user name and address and offer to download and configure the dictionary on the fly.
It and a fleet of other small irritants like this puts people off. Over the many years I have used Open Office installing it on people's machines, I have rarely been able to solve a problem by hitting the help or even searching on the openoffice site. My most successful tactic has always been to punch a few key words into Google and find some obscure mention or hint from a query like this. Most of the time I have to work it out for myself.
If you want a real exercise in frustration try finding how to remove a single data series from the Open Office Calc embedded graphs or inserting a trendline as you would in M$Office.
Until Open Office has more friendly installation scripts and a proper user friendly help system that talks about its limitations as well as its abilities, it will not, in my opinion, make serious headway against M$. </rant> |

In the future, please don't use ALL CAPS in your subject line. In fact, please click the "edit" button on your original post and change it, and add [solved].
TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS LIKE SHOUTING, AND IS UNNECESSARY IN THIS INSTANCE.
Thanks,

The following solution worked for me:
Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online...
I installed the English (Canada) dictionary, restarted OpenOffice, and spell check started to work. Also, before I did this I did the following:
Tools > Options... > Language Settings > Languages
I set the user interface language to English (UK) and the locale setting to English (Canada).
It's been said before, this is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with immediately. How can the developers of Linux (and open-source software in general) honestly expect to overtake companies like Microsoft, when simple functions like spell check don't even work. In Ubuntu, Gnometris barely works. That's really sad, considering Tetris is probably one of the first games programmed into any functioning computer. Come on open-source developers, let's see some effort.
I think tax dollars should go towards developing open-source software, because it seems the only way to get people to actually work on this stuff is to pay them. Prove me wrong, open-source. |

|

I to am having problems with spellcheck. It doesn't find any problems with my document even though I see misspelled words myself. It just isn't picking them up.
I've tried right-clicking in my text, <character...> In the language box. None is selected. I changed this to English (USA) and Ok out of the menu. Check spelling again and still not working. When I go back to check which language is selected its set back to None.
How can I fix this?
edited - Found a different fix. Somehow my OOo profile was corrupt. I followed Hagar tutorial on resetting a profile and it worked perfectly. Heres the link to that tutorial.

| why does OO has even this problem when M$ office doesn't ? The spellchecker is something that is default, not to be 'fixed' with newsthreads and forums. OO is quite crap if users have to be 'nerdy' using it. |

My spell check is not working either and I have English (USA) installed...
I have Auto Spell Checking enabled as well. When I click the spell check button it doesn't detect any words that are mispelled. I also noticed that under the Text Language Box, there is no language selected. But I can't click the box and scroll down and pick English (USA) because it keeps on ****en saying "Continue checking at beginning of document?" and I click Yes/No and it closes that box so I can NEVER change it...
Any suggestions? |

Thanks Hagar de l'Est, it works now.
Why isn't English Dictionary Spellchecker included with OO by default? |
