I'm trying to get chapter numbers to work right in a 300-page book. I think I'm missing one tiny setting. I had this working right at one time, but I must have re-set something along the way. Any help would be much appreciated - I've spent several hours on this and can't figure it out.

There are six sections and 68 chapters.

On section title pages, the section heading is formatted with Heading 1.

Each chapter heading is formatted with Heading 2.

I'm using a Chapter field plus outline numbering to generate the chapter numbers and table of contents.

The problem is that the chapter numbers restart with each new section. So I get Section 1, Chapter 2; Section 2, Chapter 1, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks.

The numbering you are getting is correct. Think in terms of Chapters instead of Sections & Chapters.
Heading1 = "Chapter 2" ----- so should be numbered 2.
Heading2 = "Chapter 2, First Sub-chapter" ----- so it should be numbered 2.1.

You could manually number and title your 6 Sections with a unique paragraph style and continue to use Heading2 for Chapters. In the TOC dialog check the Addtional Styles box, click its icon, select the unique style and advance it to the 1 position with the arrow.

Thanks much! - I expect I'll master formatting in OO about the time I finish the book...
