I am taking Statistics in college and the text book comes with a CD. On the CD, it has a plug in so you can do statistical analysis. When I install the CD it doesn't recognize Calc and I can't figure out it Calc where to enable an add on like that.

I think you need to give us a bit more information. If the text book comes with a CD what program is it supposed to work with? At last count I have seen CD's for Minitab, Excel, & SPSS (and maybe SAS?).

However in all probability none will work with OOo. There is an add-on for OOo b] Calc Add-on for Calc [/b] http://www.ooomacros.org/user.php but I know nothing about it.

It would also help if we knew what OS and version of OOo that you are using.

I'm using the latest stable version of Open Office. The CD is supposed to work with Excel and Minitab but theprofessor doesn't want us to use Minitab. I am also using the WinXP version.

I would expect that the CD Excel add-in is written in VB and that means that it will not work with OOo. As I mentioned above, I don't know anything about the OOo add-in except that it exists. Smile

If the prof is adament that you must use Excel/ a spreadsheet then you're probably stuck thought the OOo add-in may do what you want depending on the course content. You might, also, want to have a look at Gnumeric http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/ .

There are several open source (or at least free) stats packages available but if this is your first stats course you probably don't really need to be learning a new package at the same time as the prof is expecting you to use a spreadsheet. In particular, I would expec that most of the exercises and problems would be set up as spreadsheet problems and while they can be translated it may not be that easy and you would have the problem of output formats.

However :
Some sites for some dedictated statistiscs/graphing packages
(Free or shareware in most or all cases)

http://gsociology.icaap.org/methods/soft.html
http://freestatistics.altervista.org/stat.php
http://www.psychnet-uk.com/experimental_design/software_packages.htm
http://data.fas.harvard.edu/micah_altman/socsci.shtml

If you want to go with a stats program you might want to look at R http://www.r-project.org/ with the R Commander add-in. http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Misc/Rcmdr/

R on its own is not something I think anyone wants to tackle on their own unless they have at least a basic stats background. However with the R Commander package added it might do the trick.
