Hi.
I've got Ooo 2.0.0 on windows xp and Ooo on ubuntu; I'd like to upgade to the new release, but I can't find any upgrading function.
How can I do?
Am I supposed to disintall the old release and then to install the new one?
Thanks.

On Windows XP: Download OOo 2.0.4 from http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.4/index.html and simply install the new version.

On Ubuntu: Read for example this threads, which cover downloading and installing on Ubuntu (or try the search function yourself for more links):

If you upgrade to the latest Ubuntu (6.10), it is supposed to have OOo2.0.4 included. (I haven't upgraded Ubuntu yet but plan to do so in the next few days).

If instead you just want to upgrade OOo on an older version of Ubuntu, it's a bit messier. Let me know, and I'll look for the instructions that Daniel Carrera sent me.

Not at all.
Here is a simple procedure :
- Download the RPMs from OOo site.
- Remove the OOo version installed by default in Ubuntu out of the box if still installed (all green packages with 'openoffice.org2 in Synaptic). No need if you've already upgraded once before.
- Then in the console :
Code:
cd rep_install_OOo/RPMS

Sometimes, there is a warning from alien that says it encountered errors with scripts. Better use the --scripts option to avoid it :
Code:
sudo alien -d *.rpm --scripts
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

- Then update the Gnome menu and file association:
Code:
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i openoffice.org-debian-menus_2.0.4-2_all.deb

Then, try my procedure above and if it works fine, add [Solved] in your first post title.
NB: I've installed 2.0.3 and 2.0.4 this way on my Dapper (6.06).

That may be "simple", but to me it's definitely "messier" than just using Synaptic. To me *any* command-line solution is "messier". Very Happy

It is almost certainly cleaner that what your package management solution would be doing underneath. The advantage of the command line is that you get all of the error messages. Graphical frontends generally don't which means some can fail without actually telling you why. Gurpmi is a good example of a program that can do this.

I thank you all for the support, Very Happy ... but at the moment I give up 'cause I had to reinstall Ubuntu, and since the distro on cd was 5.10...
(I spare you all the mess I did). Sad

Never mind: I hope to remember the mistakes ,.. just in case for the future, but my mind is like a sieve
