I am anxious to try Oxygen Office Professional 2.0.4 on my P3 600, 256 megs, ultra lite cable internet, Win98SE computer. Are both Open Office 2.0.4 and Oxygen Office Professional 2.0.4 exactly the same Open Office software, except that Oxygen has much more, clip art, templates, fonts etc. In am not of the computer generation so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

The last I heard, yes, the actual program for Oxygen Office Professional and OpenOffice.org are the same. The only differences I am aware of is Oxygen Office has more templates, clipart, and fonts, which means it is a much larger download.

Thanks Corfy. Oxygen is twice as large as the conventional Open Office, 200 megs. But I am not of the computer generation, so every new computing experience is a challenge. That's why I thought I might get the most complete version of Open Office so I won't have to go searching for extra components, it will all be there. As a novice at these things, I won't have a bias when I am checking it out. I just like exploring new software. Thanks, again.

I don't know where you are from, but something else you might want to be aware of is most (not all, but most) of the templates seem to be in A4 format rather than Letter format. That isn't a problem for most of the world, but for those of us in the U.S., that is a small problem.

Corfy. I am in Canada. What is the A4 format? Is that going to make Oxygen unfeasible, for me, to use? Am I better off going with OO 2.0.4, then getting appropriate templates etc. from other sites? Thanks.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
A4 paper size, an international standard paper size (210×297 mm) defined by ISO 216

That works out to about 8.3 x11.7 inches, instead of 8.5 x 11, which is Letter size.

That could cause some issues when working with Writer files especially, but may also cause problems with printing Calc files. On the other hand, it is pretty much a non-issue when it comes to Impress files. It really depends on what templates you want or need. When I downloaded the Premium version a while back, all of the templates were the ones taken from http://ooextras.sourceforge.net. Things may have changed with the Oxygen Office, but I'm sure those are still included.

I'm in Canada [there's room for a lot more too], and 69 this year. When did the computer generation start? I've been doing it for something over 25 years, and was aware of it before that.

Suggestion from an old horse: Try for yourself before asking around. Not that you shouldn't ask when stuck, but getting stuck first is the best learning experience, and keep it very simple to begin with. You retain more and build on it better and faster in the long run. I'm a strong believer in the KISS principle. That means as little bloat as possible. Don't get a ton of stuff right form the start that you'll never use. Start with the basic program and add onto it as you see the need. To tell the truth, a large part of the population can get along just fine for what they need with a simple text editor and a calculator. More is better if you need it and if you can handle it.

David.

Thanks, David. I am just a few years younger than you, computing for me has just been about a six year experience. I agree with you, my computer learning exercise has mainly been trial/error, yes, I try to keep things simple as well. To be honest, I have little use for an office program, I am currently using a free, fairly complete word processor, Atlantis Nova, that fits on a floppy. However, I always enjoy learning something new in computing, a challenge for my brain, so I explore lots of exciting, free (it must be free!!) software, especially programs to protect my computer. I am even experimenting with live cd versions of Linux (Puppy Linux) which gives me some operating system variety. For my computing requirements, I feel very comfortable with Win98SE + Puppy Linux, just keeping it simple. Rogers Ultra Lite cable internet is enough for me as well. Where in Canada are you, I am in Barrie, Ontario.

You can always send me templates that you prefer if they can be distributed under OpenOffice.org compatible license.

I am using Oxygen Office Professional 2.0.4 Build1. I did notice that many but not all of the templates defaulted to A4. I just switched the A4's back too Letter for my use.

The list of templates is extensive, they are not just from OOextras, there are many others like over 90 fonts, tons of graphic images. They also mention an enhanced help menu, additional User's Manual, and the enabled extended tips that are a great help for beginners to get started using OxygenOffice Professional. I should like to know what is Oxygen Office Professional 2.0.4?
Is it part of the OOo series or something entirely different?

Regards, Alan Blackburn

Hum, have you read the posts and checked the link given by Kami ?
It's rather clear that it is standard OOo plus extras.

You can download OxygenOffice Professional 2.2.0 binary releases based on OpenOffice.org 2.2.0. Also you can download and test our Extension for OpenOffice.org 2.2.0 packages...
