Hi all

This is my first post.

Just a moment ago I opened a Writer .odt document in Wordpad, just to see what would happen, and to my great surprise I saw a paragraph of text which I deleted from the odt document several days ago, and which has been replaced by pages of other text.

I moved away from Word not least to escape the dreaded nobody-can-really-know-what-Word-is-saving-into-your-documents, but now it appears Writer is doing the same thing?!

Can anyone explain this to me?

It was with satisfaction that I read this page (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3154479.stm) and moved over to OpenOffice, but now I'm not so sure?

Please allay my fears, I don't want to go back to the dark side!!

Is the feature in Edit>Changes>Record activated ? or has it been saved with the File>Versions menu ?

The first option is set to Show, not Record, and there are no previous versions saved.

Note that Wordpad didn't open the document properly (it doesn't support odt) so none of the changed text is there, just this paragraph that I deleted a while ago - that is what shook me a bit. I was opening in wordpad simply to see what a raw odt file looks like.

It may be the reason. On my configuration, I've nothing checked.

ODT is a zip archive containing several XML files. Just change the extension to .zip and open the content.xml file inside with your web browser. You can also search the web for the specification. As OOo uses ODF (Open Document Format) which is open, it is very easy to know exactly how it is build.
