When I installed OpenOffice 2.1, I opted to not use it to automatically open word/powerpoint/etc files. Can I change this after I've installed?

Yes. Assuming you're using Windows XP, open an Explorer window then click "Tools, Folder Options, File Types". Look for ALL the file extensions for MS Office files in the list (there are QUITE A FEW!). Highlight each file extension (i.e. .DOC), click the "Change..." button, then manually select the program you want to use (i.e. MS Word for Windows for .DOC files) and click the "Always use this program..." checkbox. Click the "OK" button to save the setting. Repeat for all other MS Office file extensions then click the final "OK" button to exit the utility.

Typically, installing OOo won't automatically default to opening MS Office files. IOW, MS Office files will still "auto-seek" their appropriate Office apps (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) unless you EXPLICITLY tell them to use the equivalent OOo modules (Writer, Calc, Base, Impress).

Does this help?

You can also run the setup program again and select the Modify option when presented. You can step through this until the screen for opening MS Office docs appears.

If in Windows Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Software > OOo.
