I installed my old documents from Word Perfect and do not know how to use them in OO. Has anybody solved this problem? I would even be agreeable to download Word Perfect to use my documents but do not know where to find this either. Of course the first choice is to figure out how to convert Very Happy WP to OO

I can open WPD documents directly in Open Office from the file open menu. Maybe that is because I have WordPerfect installed. Take a look and see if the option is on your menu. (Oo 2.1) You can download a free 30-day trilal version, .

Do one of these two steps:

1) Load whatever media (floppy, CD-ROM, etc.) that has your WordPerfect (*.wpd) files into your machine. Locate one of the files and Right-click it with your mouse. Scroll down to Open with... menu item and click it with your left mouse button. On the "Open With" dialog box, highlight "OpenOffice.org".
2)Open OOo Writer so you have a blank document. Insert the media containing your WordPerfect document(s) into the appropriate drive if necessary. On the Writer's Menu Bar, select File, Open to display the file explorer dialog box. Navigate to where your WordPerfect document(s) are. On the Files of type: menu selection line (second menu line below the Explorer window), click the "down arrow" button on the right (opens a list of possible file types), scroll down the menu until you see "WordPerfect Document (*.wpd)" and click it. Then, double-click the WordPerfect document icon and Writer will open it up.

The selected document should open just fine, probably displaying the text using the Courier font.

At this time, I STRONGLY SUGGEST you re-save the file in OOo format (File, Save as... then select OpenDocument Text (.odt) in the "Save as type:" menu window line) on your hard drive. Repeat 1) or 2) for the rest of your WordPerfect documents, changing media if/as required to get them all.

When you're done, all your WorrPerfect documents should be safely "OOo-ed" to your hard drive for editing, etc. You can now remove the "WordPerfect" media and put it back into storage. At this time, it Wouldn't Be A Bad Idea to copy your "freshly OOo-ed" documents to "fresh" removable media (floppy, CD-R/RW, flash drive) Just In Case you mess up in re-editing the new documents so you can restore them fror "another try, etc."

Does this help? Smile

Open > file type > word prefect. I have never tried it, just seen it there.

FWIW, I have some old WordPerfect 5.1 dox from 1995. I just navigated to where they were (floppy disc), made sure the file file filter was "*.*" for the "File, Open...", and just double-clicked on the desired file. Writer loaded it PERFECTLY and used the "Times New Roman" font for the text.

Maybe my previous suggestion was just a mite too complicated? Wink

A concern with minor spelling errors is the sign of a small mind. Mine, of course, is so large that I cannot spell at all. Smile Besides all my relations are bicycles. I am particularly fond of the Italian side of the family.

Thanx bowlin pin but i can speell. Not too complicated but neither 1 or 2 worked---says error. My son thinks the burned CD is defect since docs won't even open in the trial Wordperfect program. I apprecioate everyone's response though because I would not have known that the CD is bad and now my son says he'll burn me a new one. He has my old hard drive.

Make sure the files on the old drive are good BEFORE he tries to burn a new disc. If the original files are bad to begin with, there's nothing more that can be done.

Good luck, etc. Smile

Files can "degrade" on hard drives primarily from mechanical effects (i.e. age, oxide damage, etc.). As long as the files on the old drive can be opened with the WordPerfect (hopefully?) installed on same, then they should be OK. In any case, your son should (if he doesn't already?) VERIFY the files' integrity after writing them to CD-ROM.

Anyhoo, I made my remarks primarily as a Technician who's Been There Before in trying to retrieve data files from "old" media. Smile

Just like paper deteriorating makes it hard to read print, so can a bad hard drive deteriorate causing its files to be corrupt. In my experience, though, corrupt files are usually caused by floppies or user error.

Recent versions have good support for opening WordPerfect documents. Supposedly, OpenOffice.org (using "libwpd") can open more versions of WordPerfect documents than any WordPerfect application, and also OOo does a good job of opening corrupt documents.

You can report any bugs or send not-working WordPerfect documents to http://libwpd.sf.net
