Not yet, possibly never if it's incompatible with the GPL and also it's not likely to become an ISO standard as it's in contradiction to many other ISO standards, like, say, the Gregorian calender.

Please search the forum, this has been discussed before:

...and many, many more.

I have a solution and it's free

Download Word vriewer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf&DisplayLang=en

Download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&DisplayLang=en

Now u can view the .xdoc

no editing

I don't know how I did this but if I right click the xdoc file I get in the open with menu microsoft open xml converter
Then it opens in OpenOffice then I can save as a normal doc file.

Maby its the XML vierwer that dit the trick:

The problem with your "free" solution is that it requires you to use operating systems that are not free. Thus, this solution in reality is not a free solution. Linux users are excluded.

the best we can do, until (and if) the docx format gets accepted as both a standard *and* a free format, is to refuse opening docx documents. Send it back to the sender and tell that you cannot read the format using available tools of your choice.

I am trying to convert a *docx file.

I have downloaded the Word Viewer and can open the file in that; now able to print or read.

However, even though I downloaded and installed both the converter and the XML viewer I cannot convert the file to plain *.doc

Right clicking on the file shows open with Word Viewer and Word Converter but whereas Viewer opens the file Converter does nothing.

Can anyone please tell me how to convert.

OxygenOffice and Go-ooo have the same .docx converter, so here is a Review of OxygenOffice as a .docx converter. As of today, the quality is OK but less than great.

Also, odf-converter-integrator (which is very high quality) and zamzar.com work with any edition of OpenOffice.org. There are other ways to open .docx files too.
