Hi
I have just influenced a friend of mine to download OO0 for his Mac (updated to OSX10.2.4).
Follwing the installation, 2 files appeared on the desktop - 0001012darwinfb and ooo1012darwinfb1.
Despite installing both of these files, when attempting to "start openoffice.org" there is a message "where is XDarwin?" As a result OO doesn't start.
Have we overlooked something? Sorry if I'm a bit thick - I'm know nothing about Macs and my friend knows nothing about installs, if it doesn't involve slapping in a CD.
Thanks
Ian

| The mac version requires X11. Did you install X11 prior to installing OOo? |

No we didn't.
To Quote from the website:
"OpenOffice.org works fine with XFree86, which is included in the installer, and Apple's recently released X11. Apple's X11 considerably improves X-Windows speed and appearance. As far as we know, the only drawback to using X11 is that it limits the fonts available. You need to add them, and we will post instructions how, later."
Our conclusion here was that X11 is optional, simply improving performance. It goes on:
"If you are attempting to use Mac OS X 10.1 or Darwin 5 there is no support available at this time." Again this does not suggest to me that it won't actually work
Methinks the wording could be changed a bit.
I'm not sure my pal will fancy installing a big upgrade to his OS, or is it a minor thing?
Thanks for your input

Sorry, when I said X11, I meant X windows in general, not specifically the Apple X11 port.
XFree86 is one implementation of X11. Apple's X11 is another (which I guess is based on XFree86).
I guess the new OOo installer for MacOS X includes XFree86? Perhaps all you need to do is install the included XFree86 files during the installation? |

I just installed Apple's newist X11 (3/17/03) and OpenOffice.org. I accepted all defalts and with sweaty hands clicked "Start OpenOffice.org" from the folder in my applications folder.
An X11 window opened but nothing else. I was about to quit and do some troubleshooting when the OpenOffice.org splash screen appeared, then nothing. I quit everything and started over with "Start OpenOffice.org" and more patience. TaDa! It worked. I opened a Word document and an Excel spreadsheet.
So far so good. |
