Saving Options not done properly?
-----------------------------------------
Same story with OpenOffice 2.2 upgrading over 2.1.
Version 2.1 worked b-e-a-u-tee-fully in English and German.

With version 2.2, I added with the wizard French and Spanish dictionaries/hyphenation/thesaurus files.
From then on, I couldn't understand why words didn't get properly hyphenated.
Then, i noticed that even SIMPLE foreign words weren't acknowledged.

Low and behold... my dictionaries weren't loaded, nor my settings kept in effect.
I tagged my options, the tag disappeared after reloading the very same -- or any other -- file.
Thanks to the forum helpers, liguistic.xcu seems to be the culprit.I renamed the "Program files" and the "user" files to _old_linguistic.xcu just in case. and voilà, problems solved.

Now, I don't want to die stupid and so i'd like to know WHY, and WHAT do I need to know to cope with similar situations of ANY options not saving properly. This should be part of my user education. Did I miss a section int the manual? Should I RTFM again?

No, you haven't done anything wrong, it's simply a bug of the code. You can vote for it here : Issue 72957 - User settings overridden by installation and/or add a comment to the report showing it's rather critical, especially for new users.

No other settings should be lost except a problem with permissions on the configuration folders but it's not so frequent.

To avoid this kind of problem, you can also add your dictionaries manually, you only need to unzip the files in the folder (either main one or user profile) and edit the dictionary.lst file, see here (§2 & §3) : Tutorial for Spell check and Language configuration and here : Non-automated Spelling / Hyphenation Installation.

Merci, Hagar (de l'Est...) pour ta ecommendation manuelle dont je suis déjà au courant.
Mais bon, je voulais aller au plus simple de l'automation.

In fact, the file linguistic.xcu can cause problems when you install a language pack (to change the language UI : menus and dialogs) and additional dictionaries through the wizard.

But perhaps there is something else that can lead to the same issue. Try to remove this file (in \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office).

NB: to remove the dictionnaries you don't want, you've to edit some configuration file, see here : [Tutorial] Spell check.

[Edit] There is also this linguistic.xcu file in C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 2.0\share\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office, try to remove this one also. I think OOo replaces the one in your user profile by this one.

Solved !!!!

I deleted the file linguistic.xcu from those folder plus the backup file linguistic.xcu.bak from the first folder. Now OOo remembers the settings....

Thank you !!

I also had that problem until this very minute. I only have one UI language installed (English) at the moment. Before installing OpenOffice.org 2.2 I had OpenOffice.org 2.1 Swedish and I had the same problem.
However, I have installed Swedish dictionaries, not the ones you can install with the built in guide, since they are not any good, but this one, but that shouldn't matter.

My problem was that I had to check Tools → Options… → Language Settings → Writing Aids → User-defined dictionaries → Egen [All] everytime I started an OpenOffice.org application (Egen means something like "My own", just in case someone is curious). Very annoying I thought, so I wrote about it to the OpenOffice.org User's list, and someone there pointed me to this thread.

After reading it, I first I removed the following files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny Andersson\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu
C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny Andersson\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu.bak
There were also a Linguistic tmp file in the same folder, and I removed that too.

Then I started an OpenOffice.org application, I think it was Calc, checked the Egen [all] dictionary and closed OpenOffice.org again, without saving anything, since there was nothing to save (the save button was inactive).

This didn't help at all, and when I checked C:\Documents and Settings\Johnny Andersson\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\, the Linguistic.xcu and the Linguistic.xcu.bak was back again, so I guess OpenOffice.org puts them there everytime something is changed, or maybe just because they are missing.

So I went for the other one, C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org\share\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu and removed it. NOW it works! And that file doesn't seem to come back either.

So, if someone else has this problem, go for removing the C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org2\share\registry\data\org\openoffice\Office\Linguistic.xcu and don't bother about the other ones.

Not sure where to go to "vote" for this bug, so I'll just say it here - i had the same problems as you guys, except i was trying to install English Australian. Deleted the linguistic.xcu file, and my default language seems to stay as English (Australian). Which is nice.

Anyhoo, cheers for a great program... and thanks for the help...

Same here! WinXP, OOo 2.2: I want to set the standard language to spanish, it always went back to German, until I found this post, and deleted Linguistic.xcu (the program file, as Guraknugen wrote). That did it.
Thanks!

For information, the issue has been tagged as "solved" (on issue tracker) and the new version of the dictionary wizard has been modified (from DicOOo 1.8). This issue should disappear slowly now (only old versions of the dics wizard would lead to this situation). Thanks to all who have voted for this issue.
