When I try to start OpenOffice, I get the following message:
Quote:
Either another instance of OpenOffice.org is accessing your settings or your personal settings are locked. Simultaneous access can lead to inconsistencies in your personal settings. Before continuing, you should make sure user "closes Openoffice.org on host".

I don't know how to solve this. I don't even know what the problem is. So, how do I solve this and how do I prevent this to happen again?

When you launch OpenOffice, it creates a "lock" file in your user settings folder. In Linux, the location is ~/.openoffice.org2/.lock . In Windows, the file should be in a location like one of these:
c:\documents and settings\username\Application Data\ OpenOffice.org2\
Under Win 98 - C:\Windows\Application Data\OpenOffice.org2\

When you exit, the file should be deleted. I don't know why your file is not deleted. You may find the reason by searching in this sub-forum. It may have something to do with the Quick Starter, which seems to be far more trouble than it's worth.

As explained in the previous post, this might be because of a corrupted
c:\documents and settings\username\Application Data\ OpenOffice.org2\
folder

so you could :
1) disable the quickstarter by going in open office in Tools > options > openoffice > memory and uncheck the quickstarter box

2) then try deleting the whole folder named above and start Open Office again

This should work
