I do not understand what file format to use in Calc. ods or xml. both are being called native formats. ods cannot be opened by Excel. Can Excel.xml be opened by the newer Excel? I have 2000 and could put in Excel XP pro.
what is the difference between ods and xml? |

OpenOffice.org's native spreadsheet format is OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods). If you are sharing with Microsoft Office users, typically you want to send Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls) which is a binary, non-XML format.
In general, I recommend not using the Microsoft Excel 2003 (.xml) format because few programs open it. _________________ <signature>

To add AndrewZ's comments, Calc uses ods as its native format and it is probably best to always save in ods. When you have to share with an MS Office user just do a "Save As" and save as an xls format.
The rationale for this is that very occasionally saving into xls will mess up a file. If you are always saving in xls you don't have any recourse. If you have the file in ods you still have a functioning file that you can try to modify to work properly in Excel or at least that you can send as a PDF file.
Or if the Excel user is desperate enough he can install OOo himself. _________________ jrkrideau

Is that correct? In my version .xml is described as a M$ format. I doubt that it has been adopted as an OOo format. _________________ search forum by month |

| thanks for all the help. I'm trying to wean from Excel 2002 xp pro. Excel however is easier and faster, but I have a great dislike for MS even apart from the price. Wish for an extra 'fat' box in the ready to use borders (do not want to learn styles and save defaults or templates, don't have a clue what that all is). The choices offered on do it yourself alignment are all in technical terms, I do not understand. Also a much easier to do simple arrow in one step, instead of making a line, then choose your arrow and usually it ends up on the wrong side. These are my only beefs, apart from the slow load, otherwise openoffice is beautiful and the larger icons looks much nicer than Excel's. |
