I have records that need to be imported into an existing database table - There are over 400 entries, I cannot just re-enter the information, and I already have a database to use so I don't want to create a new "database" just because I need to import records.
Can anyone point me in the right "importing" direction |

Open your database
Select the Table tab
Open new Calc sheet
Load the .xls into Calc
Delete any column headings
Select all
Drag to Base
New Tbale Wizard starts
Give it the name of the Table you want to add records to
Select Append check box.
Click Next and follow the Wizard. |

Assuming your "database" is a simple Excel spreadsheet, just open the .xls with Calc. The spreadsheet should open just as it did with Excel. If necessary, verify the column headings are what you want them to be and ensure all yoru "data" is otherwise intact (formatting, column widths, etc.).
Next, resave the sheet in Calc (.ods) format ("File, Save As..." from the Menu Bar, then select "OpenOffice.org Spreadsheet (.ods)" as the format, then click the "OK" button). You can use the same "base" name as your Excel spreadsheet.
Now, register the newly-created .ods as a database Source from whatever OOo application (Writer, Base) you wnat to use it with. Voila! your data SHOULD be there, ready and waiting for you to use.
If this doesn't work, then use alan4171's method.
Good luck and always be in awe of your OOo.... _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |
