OpenOffice.org can't open docx yet. To my knowledge, the only program that can open docx is the new Word 2007, but I might be wrong about that. _________________ Laugh at life or life will laugh at you. |

It appears it might be a Word 2007(?) XML file. OOo can't deal with those critters yet. _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |

Until a new version of Open Office is released that can handle these .docx files, convert them online to .doc or .rft, either through Google docs, o through
http://www.docx2doc.com/

Eh? You mean an ODF translator for Word I guess, since OpenOffice doesn't need an ODF translator.
Last I heard, there will be no .docx translator for OpenOffice. As I understand, that's as much political as anything: they don't want to accept and support .docx as a "legitimate" file format. Better to have Office convert .docx to .doc and then open that in OOo.
But I'm probably wrong: all the hue and cry over these file formats and office suites just gives me a headache. Everybody uses the same five or six letters to name everything, and everybody who tries to explain it has an axe to grind.
PS: Yep, looks like I'm all wet again: | Quote: | • Office 12 XML import infrastructure and implementation

• Writer: OOXML Import: Tokenizer
| From: Development at a Glance - Weekly Update CW09. (Thanks to AndrewZ for that link.)
PPS: Novell is already offering a translator for their edition of OOo:
| Quote: | OpenOffice. OpenXML Translator.
product description
The OpenXML Translator provides support for opening and saving Microsoft* OpenXML-formatted word processing documents (.docx) in OpenOffice.org. | The link probably won't last long; look under Novell's download section.

As far as I can tell, that's an add-on to MSOffice, so it would not be much use to anyone who doesn't have MSOffice. Or am I missing something?
But even if it works without MSOffice, it's Windows-only so useless for Linux users.
rotomano's tip looks useful, but I haven't checked it out yet. _________________ Regards, Jean Hollis Weber
