Does anyone know a way to obtain and assign MS Office icons to *.doc files? I use OOo exclusively on my laptop, but for work I have to work with MSO files. (MSO is not installed on my laptop.) So I'd like to have a way to distinguish OOo from MSO files. Question

There is a thread in the Troubleshooting forum IIRC. You can right click on a .doc file and in the properties tab, there should be a button to change the default application to be used. Or select Open with still from context menu and choose MSO.

Thanks to add '[Solved]' in your first post title (edit button) if your issue has been fixed.

I understand that I can associate files to applications. But can I assign MSO icons to *.doc files if I do not have MSO on my system?

ok, I was not sure reading your first post.

You've to edit the icon related to .doc files through the base of registry. I did it some years ago to customize my system but I no longer use Windows (except at work) so I don't remember exactly. But a Google search should give you some hints.

I think Microsoft would have a problem with that. They're very protective of their icon sets and how they're used, and whether anyone else's icons look too much like them. (It's understandable, though. They put a lot of effort and research and money into developing them.)

As for how to assign an icon to a file type, I can't help (I only know how to reassign icons to shortcuts) but I can suggest that the method would certainly depend on the OS you're using, which hasn't been specified yet.

[EDIT}
I have a feeling that what you want might not be possible, or might not be possible to do easily. If that turns out to be the case, perhaps you could just set up a directory specifically for .doc files...?

You can change the icon properties without having MS0ffice installed, IIRC they are in a dll that comes with windows. Another option would be to download the free Office file viewers and install them .

How would one go about finding and editing it?

That's a great suggestion.

Base of registry. I'll check tomorrow if I've the time but I remember having seen in the BoR a place where all the extensions are listed. You can specify here IIRC a specific icon. That's what do new applications when the get installed on the system, the have to declare the extension and the icon to be used.

I would select "closed", but when I went to "Edit" on my first submission, I didn't see any such thing. Question

If you want to add the tag '[Solved]' in the thread heading, you've to type it manually in the first post title (using the edit button), no button to do it automatically.

On Windows, select Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types. Select the Doc file type then click the Advanced button. There you will find the button to change the icon, but I don't know where the icon itself is located.

Sweeeet!! I'd never have thought to look there. I have a set of Celtic icons that I can't remember where I found, but use them everywhere I can... now my Word documents sport a wild boar's head. Heheh.

Thanks, Bill!

Well done. I don't remember it was a feature available in W95.
