I know this question on how to do this has been asked before, but I see no information about it for the OpenOffice.org 2.1.0 version. It appears to in fact be in the program when you click on FORMAT > ALIGNMENT > CENTER but CENTER (along with TOP and BOTTOM) are grayed out.

My question is this. Are these suppose to be grayed out as it is a feature that is a 'work in progress' that will work in a newer version of OpenOffice.org or should these not be grayed out at all with the current version?

BTJustice,

The bottom part of the alignment submenu is greyed when you select "normal" text. But if you select a text in a table, then it is active and indicates how the text should be vertically aligned: TOP, CENTER (vertically) or BOTTOM.

The vertical alignment menu is in the wrong place. It should not be on the format menu, but on the Table menu, which is where I moved it. Tools, Customise, Menus.

Cool, but I hope future versions of OpenOffice.org will not require a table to be inserted into the document to align page(s) vertically.

Agreed. This is one WordPerfect feature I would like to see in Writer.

WP had a number of very good layout tools - vertical tabbing and vertical centring among them.
I think that one of the problems of the world is emulating MSword, rather than thinking properly about what people want to do.
