OpenOffice.org 2.2.0 is currently hitting the mirrors right now. For those of you running RC4, this is the same. [680m14(Build:9134)]

These have it for all platforms so far. Most other mirrors don't have it yet at this time.

No mention of it on the official OOo site or any sign of any release notes.

What's new in this release? Too many times I've seen a rumor of a new release and rushed out to get the latest version as soon as it appears, only to find that there's absolutely no noticeable improvement over what I was using before.

Honestly, nothing much noticeable when it comes to visual representation or noticeable performance differences.

Release notes are equal to RC4:
http://development.openoffice.org/releases/2.2.0rc4.html

Press Release:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Press_release_2.2

Some mention of fonts displaying more clearly throughout all of OOo... but I certainly don't notice any difference.

EDIT: Keep in mind that it does have the patches included for those latest security vulnerabilities discovered.

http://vlaai.snt.utwente.nl/pub/software/openoffice/stable/2.2.0/ (28 March 2007)

are they really the final 2.2.0 release???

Unfortunately, I (and many others, it seems) do have notice something when it comes to visual representation: text in CALC notes disappear when the text flow to a new line, or when you enter ENTER or when you redimension the frame of the note. The text is not erased, but disappear from the screen, so that you cannot directly edit it. This was not the case in 2.1.
A couple of people reported this defect already with release RC3 and 4. But they (who are they?) do not seem to hear -not in time, at least- in spite of them (?) encouraging us to inform about bugs, etc.

I have found so far this morning that small text in Calc looks terrible. When opening the same spreadsheet in Excel Viewer 2003 it looks so much better. This is on Windows XP, by the way.

The release is buggy as he.. well something. Unless you need the new features, I'd suggest against upgrading to the .0 version.

As I said before, the new releases don't go through enough testing any more. Stick to 2.0.4 if you can, or better yet, to 1.1.5.

There is a serious problem when creating or editing Notes in Calc, described in the Calc forum. This does not affects all texts, only Notes. Apart from this, I have not found any other problem.
On the "plus" side, it seems to me that files open faster, and some animations in Impress presentations also move faster (much faster that in 2.2 RC4, by the way).

I moved over to RC4 last week, and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. I was pleased to notice that the problem with OOo not shutting down correctly, which I had experienced intermittently in the past, hasn't recurred at all.

I believe that among the new features are: turning on autokerning by default, and stopping some security problems involving the import of WordPerfect files.

For a complete list of new features/bugfixes, see the release notes for RC4, which is identical with the 2.2 stable version.

I have no idea...

Surely there have to be some? Why else would a new 2.x branch be started and released unfinished, with all these new bugs piling upon one another, and the code base becoming of lower and lower quality after each new "stable" branch...

So there HAS to be new features. Wouldn't it otherwise be folly to release new branches just for the fun of doing so? Isn't that kind of behaviour rather associated with expensive, commercial software... oh wait, but OOo tries to compete with expensive, commercial software. If quality is not of priority in the competitive product, surely it does not need to be in OOo?

That's how the logic goes these days.

Are there new features? I don't know. I don't even care. 2.2 won't find its way onto my harddrive...

No new features that I have noticed with my daily use of Writer and Calc. I have reverted back to the 2.0.4 Novell Edition and actually 'gained' many new features.

OOo changed their whole version system recently with regards to this and future releases which will essentially make the version number grow faster, similar to the strategy of many commercial software products. In my opinion, the only reason why software companies do that is for a false sense of maturity of the product, making it appear more mature as the version number grows more quickly.

EDIT: I used to look forward to new releases of OOo with more enthusiasm. But lately there hasn't been a whole lot to look forward to. In all honesty, the Novell Edition has been a pleasant surprise on Windows for me.
