Is there any way in OpenOffice Calc to merge two whole columns?

What I mean is to take each cell in one column, and merge it the cell adjacent to it, and repeat that action for every cell in both columns.

And, further, preserve the data in both.

So, for example, if we started with:
| cat | dog |
| fish | bird |
| man | beast |

We would end up with:
| cat dog |
| fish bird |
| man beast |

Is this in any way possible?

The answer is, Yes. Please see the link below for an explanation of two methods available in Calc.

http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=41040

Please note, that after applying the formula to a cell, you can then 'copy the formula' down the column for each cell. Look in Calc Help the topic: copying;formulas .

Additionally, you might want to include in your "concatenate" formula, a space between the values in the first column before adding the values of the second column.

I hope this helps, please be sure to let me / us know.

Thank you, this has worked and solved the problem.

I was looking for a tool like "Merge Cells" to do what I needed. I hadn't thought of using formulas. So not only have I learned how to merge columns, I've gained a new perspective on how to approach problems in Calc.

Thank you for the advice.

To reuse Dave's example:

Now that the column looks like this:
| cat dog |
| fish bird |
| man beast |

What would I do in order to copy it to a different table. If I just try to select and copy, OOo just copies the formula.

Use Paste Special at your destination cell. Uncheck Paste All and Formulas. Copying the formula is how spreadsheets work.
