Nothing has changed. My guess is that nothing will change anytime soon, since the workaround is straightforward.

If you do this so often that it's a problem, then just define an autotext to do it. Making a vertically-centered frame can be as easy as typing a two-letter shortcut and pressing F3.

If that's still too much, record a macro to insert the autotext and assign it to a keystroke.
