newb needs help deploying a writer template application

Hello all,
I'm converting an application that creates a writer document and fills it out from a database.
The vba code was fairly easy to port and I have it working and creating the document.
I'm having trouble finding documentation because it seems to be very disorganized.
Here are my questions:

1. I thought I would put the oobasic code into a writer template and the user can just create a new document from a template when they want the output. Is there a better way? Maybe as an addon? Maybe just give them the macro and they can run it from the tools menu?

2. I have a database needed for the project. How do you distribute and automatically register a database for a naive user?
