I wouldn't mind RSS for this forum, and it would certainly make it more convenient, but it isn't a neccessity. I visit enough forums that don't have it that I can live with it or without it.

The only feed I would be interested in would be changes to "my" topics, or to topics I had flagged. Any thing else would be more traffic than I want to pick through--that and the fact that the topic titles are mostly not helpful.
I usually filter new posts by
a) my posts
b) posts with no replies and in a forum I can help with
c) topics that look "interesting"
d) topics needing mod (spams or misplaced)
I'm not sure RSS would help with any of that.
I wish the forum had a customizable search/filter that would show me just those items--and an RSS of that would be superb. |

It's funny you should mention that but I was thinking along the same lines. At its simplest all an RSS feed is an XML query on a database of message threads on a "channel". Many current BBs including phpBB3 support such syndication.
My thought was to allow [power] users an extended profile where they could set up a number of custom channesl based on specified filter criteria. It's a little programming project, but entirely doable — but for another place as we might say.
