It has affected both writer and Word.
This is also noticable in email client Thunderbird and outlook express.

If that doesn't help, then we need to know a lot more about what you're seeing. But I think you'll find what you need there.
Does it affect the same documents in Writer and Word (if you open a Word document in Writer, for example)? Do you mean Writer and Word documents or Writer and Word applications? That is, are you working with .odt and .doc files in OOo, or are you running Writer and Word separately and noticing the spell checker not working? What do you mean by "some documents"---just new files? or older files that worked correctly before but don't now? or a random mix?
