No base wizard/icon in OOo 3.0

Hi

I'm using Linux and OOo 3.0 and in the main opening splash screen the database icon is greyed out. Also in OOo clicking on NEW, there is no option to create a database. Generally i get the impression it is disabled. Is this normal or do I nee to do something to ativate it?
