Just switched from being an Excel user to Calc. In Excel there was a currency format that would show a currency value w/o the $. The activation key was a comma (,). Example would be to display $1,500.00 as 1,500. How do I do this in Calc?

Use the style concept. It's much more flexible than anything Excel has to offer. Create a cell style and assign a shortcut (e.g. Ctrl+comma) to apply the style.
