Well, someone recently left in a huff. On the way out, however, he mentioned IBM's continuance of Lotus Symphony. As it happens, I had recently noticed that download here:

I'm not one to cut off my nose to spite my face, so I downloaded it. In my opinion it's definitely worth a look. One thing I checked right away was that I prepared an OO Calc document, and also save that in Excel 97 format. When I had Lotus up and running, I drag/dropped the Excel file onto the empty spreadsheet ...and it loaded in. I tried the same with the OO file, and guess what? No, you were wrong. It loaded in just as easily. A plain sheet, of course, no macros. But how can you test everything when there is no guarantee anywhere that a file will REALLY be saved in that format?

So... on with the testing. Definitely worth a look.

David.
