Howard and Sliderule--
Thank you for these ideas. They are good ones and I appreciate your efforts very much.
Responses specific to my luck with them follow.
Howard--
There is a file called document.xml. Firefox opens it with this kind of stuff buried in the file:
| Code: | </w:p>
−
<w:p w:rsidR="005326D9" w:rsidRDefault="005326D9">
−
<w:pPr>
−
<w:rPr>
<w:sz w:val="24"/>
<w:szCs w:val="24"/>
</w:rPr>
</w:pPr>
−
<w:r>
−
<w:rPr>
<w:sz w:val="24"/>
<w:szCs w:val="24"/>
</w:rPr>
<w:t>Floor lamp with built on table</w:t>
</w:r>
−
<w:r w:rsidR="00F40A16">
−
<w:rPr>
<w:sz w:val="24"/> |
gedit shows much much more text, all run together, and after about 4 minutes I still cannot scroll it, because gedit is still trying to open it.
Writer 2.3 gives me much the same as FF, but without the indents.
So for my file, this is not an easy edit--not a simple reformat as your file was. You are lucky, I was not.

Yes, there are a couple sites like that. Those sound great, but this particular file has confidential info in it, and I am not sure those sites are trustworthy. Particularly since they all want my e-mail address, which adds to my suspicion. _________________ :-Doug. |

I don't get this expectation that people should just have to find a way to open the non-standard file format you send them. I would never sent an ODT format to somebody I knew was likely to be opening with MS Office. Similarly just because somebody has the new MS Office 2007 doesn't mean they should expect everybody can open DOCX files. I haven't received one yet, but I would send back and ask the person to save as a DOC file explaining most people don't have Office 2007 and can't open that file format. _________________ WinXP Home SP2, OOo 2.3.0, Firefox 2, Thunderbird 2 |

I regularly write back to people who send me .doc files asking for a .pdf or a .rtf before I am prepared to open it. |

I think it's mostly ignorance - the 90% I referred to above who think everyone's computer is the same as theirs. The person who sent me a docx file just said "I don't understand all that technical stuff" when I pointed out there was a problem, I'm not sure she would have known how to re-save as a doc or rtf file. Then there are those that like to show off that they've got the latest thing, and think everyone else should catch up with them i.e. the arrogant! It's this ignorance and peer pressure that MS trade on. _________________ Howard

Another side of this for me is Micro$oft should not be able to get away with hiding things in some cryptographic system--we'd ought to be able to crack the code. Perhaps there is some of the thrill of the chase or of the solving of a mystery in it, too! _________________ :-Doug. |

Good point. I guess if we never challenge those people the ignorance and arrogance will just live on. It is a perfect opportunity to shed a little light on the subject. _________________ WinXP Home SP2, OOo 2.3.0, Firefox 2, Thunderbird 2 |

Just as an FYI . . . perhaps another technique to use to 'convert' the DOCX file (Microsoft Word 2007) so you can use it in Writer ( OpenOffice ) is by using the web page:
http://www.zamzar.com/
From that web page you can 'Select' the DOCX file . . . upload it . . . tell it to 'convert' it to an ODT format . . . then . . . it will upload it to the Zamzar site, convert it . . . and . . . you will receive the file back in a format OpenOffice can open within minutes.

That's a good tip. I added it to the FAQ.
