The task manager said that soffice.bin was using 20,120 K of memory (Mem Usage column) and soffice.exe was using 4,276 K, even though no Open Office programs were running. I decided to turn off quick start for Open Office, which made those two processes disappear, freeing up memory, but I'd really like to keep quick start for Writer and turn it off for the other OO programs. I'm not sure how much that would lower the 20,120 memory usage, but if it would lower it significantly then it should be an option.
Besides starting Writer faster, having Writer in the system tray would allow me to open the template of my choice more easily than with the desktop icon. If you use the desktop icon then first Writer opens, then you have to select a template, then a new window opens with the template, then you have to close the first window.
A couple of others complained about the quick start memory usage problem here and there's a whole thread about it here.
I looked at the options in the taskbar properties but I couldn't find anything that lets me add just Writer to the taskbar. Maybe I could find a way if I search Microsoft's website, but the best solution would be to have just one Open Office quick start icon that can be configured so only the programs you select will be quick started. |
