Turning off numbering?

I often do papers where I have to start questions like this:

1. Blah blah blah blah

2. Blah blah blah blah

That openoffice.org numbers the next line for me is profoundly annoying, because 1) this is difficult to erase 2) it persists, even after I click "turn off numbering." How can I permanently turn off this kind of numbering?

Tools > AutoCorrect > Options tab and disable Apply numbering,etc.
