The above symbol is a "Check Mark", I need to use it a great deal, so obtaining it via Special Charactors is not an efficient way.
Is there a way (simple) of making this available for use? Also what does the code U+FOFC mean?

You could use this macro:

http://codesnippets.services.openoffice.org/Writer/Writer.InsertUnicodeCharacter.snip

U+FOFC is the Unicode number; I suspect in this case Wingdings is using an out-of-range, user-denoted value.

For Unicode checkmark see:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2713/index.htm

[Of course, on Linux one can just enter with Ctrl+Shft+U followed by 2713]

If only the Webdings symbol is suitable for use (there is no equivalent Unicode character) then you will probably need to record a macro using your keyboard.

An alternative to Robert's macro is to make it an autotext item. Edit > Autotext >

You might find a real check box helpful since you can check or uncheck it as needed.

View > Toolbars > Form Controls. If the controls appear grayed out (normal) click the yellow triangle with green pencil. Click and release over the check box. In your document, click and drag a box. Once finished sizing, etc., click the triangle again. Once in your document you can copy and paste new ones.

And yes, you can make an AutoText item out of this type of check box.
