Wow, there is no information at all to go on here, not even confirmation that you're trying to edit the file in Writer... but I'm going to guess that you are.
What was the original file format? -- I'd guess it's .doc, but I could be wrong, maybe its MS Works or WordPerfect or something. Please give as many details as possible about the source of the letterhead file.
There's no way to begin to guess what version of OOo (OpenOffice) you're using, so you'll definitely need to supply that, along with your OS (operating system) version... Windows XP? Vista home edition? Something else?
"My documents" is a file location, not a program, so I'm not sure what you mean by it "opens in my documents". Are you just saying you go into My Documents (which means you're running some version of Windows) double-click on the file and it opens? If so... it opens in what program?
If it's a PDF file, you won't be able to edit it at all; you can only view it in a reader (such as Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader). Those don't let you add text.
If it's an image file, the file will open in a graphics editor such as MS Paint, or Photoshop, or MS Photo Editor or something, and you might not be able to add text to the file... but I'm guessing you already know that.
If the document opens as read-only, it should tell you that in the window title bar. If you try to type into a read-only document, it won't give you an error message... it won't do anything at all. Look in the toolbar area. Is there just one toolbar? Do you see a tool that looks like a blank page with a green pencil poised over it? If so, that's the Edit tool.. if you click it, are you now able to type text into the document?
If that doesn't help, please do be much more specific about the file, about your computer environment, and about what exact actions you're taking to try to edit the file. _________________ Cheers!

Thanks for your reply fox. I had ben struggling with this for a while and it was late in the day when i posted my info on the forum.
I have been sent a letter head via e-mail. The letter head was prepared on Word. I have just started using the newest version of Open Office Write. The letterhead will open in Write but i have just not been able to figure out how to enter text into the document.
My pc is running on Windows XP. I know that i should be able to enter text but it was frustrating that nothing i tried had the effect i wanted. I think i will have to invest in one of the Open Office manuals.
I am now about to try and use the document again.
Best Wishes
Kevin. |

| Any chance it's read-only? Save it as a native writer file, and open that. Can you edit it? |

| Is the "letter head" an image over the document? |

If the document is not read-only, your cursor should be automatically positioned in the first available text paragraph and you should be able to just start typing.
Because it seems you're not able to do this, one of my previous suggestions probably applies. Please do this: Click the View menu and find the option "Nonprinting Characters." Is it enabled?
If it isn't (meaning, it's greyed out and does nothing when you click it) then the document is read-only and you'll need to find the Edit tool I described earlier.
If it is enabled, please select it. This should change the appearance of the document on your screen, and should show one or more empty paragraphs (marked by pilcrows) in the document body. If you don't see any empty paragraphs, then the letterhead graphic is probably sitting in front of them. You can click on the graphic and choose Format> Wrap> In background. Now you should see empty paragraphs.

Invest in what you can get for free? Try the link in my sig line below for free PDF files. There's also an online version of the Writer Guide in the wiki: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Writer_Guide

Any chance you could post the resulting document to a file hosting service, then people can see what is happening, and stop guessing?

Hi guys. I have tried the suggestions you have given but these have not worked.
The reason i imported the letterhead is that i am the secretary of a carers support group and this is a letterhead that has been designed for us. I had a letter i wanted to write for the group and i wanted the groups letterhead on the document.
The letterhead was created by a colleague who uses word and microsoft desktop publishing software.
My pc never had any of the main microsoft office suites on it instead it came with Ability office which i do not like.
When i click on edit the document becomes read only.
"Non Printing Characters" is enabled.
After clicking on the graphic another rectangular box comes up with a colour display and the word picture.
I have been able to enter into the wrap menu's but to no effect as regards using my document.
The problem is my lack of knowledge (ignorance). I need to learn how to use the softwares features properly which i would feel most comfortable doing using a manual.
The Letter i wanted to write is now done and i have passed it over to somebody else to add the letterhead on this occaision. This is however something i will need to master for later.
Thanks everyone for your advice.

Hi Kevin,
I think that David's suggestion of posting an example is about the best idea. There could be so many different reasons for the problem that without an example it is unlikely that anyone here will be able to figure it out.
Handy places to post a file:
