I have been using OpenOffice in Windows for several years without any problems. Now, it is about one year that I am testing Ubuntu. Everything seems to be running well, excepting the printing quality of my Hp 3550 deskjet printer. Characters are definitely of very poor quality and they are stuck together. It that maybe peculiar of some specific fonts or sizes?
I would really appreciate your advice

I've got one of those too. Not the greatest printer ever but I hardly ever print anything on it. What driver are you running? The HPLIP driver is very good in general but I have found the print quality under Linux to be worse with it and this printer than under Windows. Other HP printers I've seen don't seem to have this problem with HPLIP.

Have you tried printing from different programs under Linux? Any print quality issues there? Try printing a test page from the HP Toolkit and see what comes out.

I strongly suspect that it could be a problem of fonts. The file I printed has been created in Windows OpenOffice and contained the Times New Roman font in several sizes ( 10, 11 and 12). As a matter of fact only the 12 was very bad, the 10 and 11 were quite acceptable. I have seen that Times New Roman is not a font that Ubuntu offers in the Format/character menu, I should probably try something similar to Times, like (for what I know) the Nimbus Roman. What happens in general when Linux meets a font which is not in its database? Any means of adding fonts to Linux?

Touring the web I found a very easy solution: msttcoref, a package which contains Microsoft fonts. msttcoref is very easily installed with synaptic, and now I am able to have a good print of my files containing Times New Roman characters.I

I have an HP 5510 all in one printer that works well with my laptop when running Windows XP. The print quality is sharp and everything basically works. However, when I tried the Ubuntu live CD for Edgy Eft , I was able to use the drivers to print using the 5510, but the print quality was noticeably worse than the quality in Windows. What do you think is the problem? Am I using the incorrect drivers (as the printer is supposed to be supported), is the problem due to using OpenOffice as opposed to Microsoft Office, or is it something else? I have the original HP drivers install CD I used to install on my Windows XP OS, should I use that instead of the original linux drivers?

Printing duplex on a printer without automatic duplex is a nightmare if
one wants to print from writer. The most annoying and broken thing wrt to printing is that even, if I select to print pages 5,3,1* (in that order), writer reorders them and
prints them in 1,3,5 order making impossible to print large documents on
both sides.

All the printer get supported by the ubuntu and the printing quality depends on the printer and the cartridge used in it. So the quality of printing is inferior than it have nothing to do with the Ubuntu system. So check the printer and its related items.
