|
|
Hi everyone,
i work in a italian public library, with several pc's connected to a laser network printer, with OO.org 2.3 installed.
All the users can print your own documents from usb-keys, created from MS-Word, OO, or other wordprocessor softwares, to the public printer, with A4 paper inside.
When a newbie prints a document, with page format set to "Letter" (21,6x27,9cm.) the laser printer shows an error message, because cannot find the "Letter" paper.
Besides, some docs are setup to "manual feed", so the printer says that there is no paper loaded into the manual "LF" feeder.
Is is possibile to setup OpenOffice writer to convert automatically the "Letter" format to "A4" and discard any information about the paper feed ?
There are several users, with several kind of docs, with several problems...
Thank you very much, sorry for my very bad English.....

As far as I know OO.org will honor the page formating. But you should be able to tell your printer to reformat and print.
I do not know what printer you have but on HP printers you find a setting for printing on the default paper size overriding the user defined one. |

I don't think there is any easy way to do this automatically in OOo. Also changing from letter to A4 can make some very big changes in the format of the file. _________________ jrkrideau

Try doing "File, Print" from the Menu bar. Click the "Properties" (or is it "Preferences"?) button on the printer dialog window. From there you should be able to select A4 using the "Paper Size" drop-down menu (make sure the printer is loaded with A4 paper first! ), click "OK", then All Should Print Well.
Hope this helps, etc. _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |

What's this going to do to the formatting? _________________ jrkrideau

...nothing.
MS-Word DO discard the "Letter" format and lets print to A4 without problems, with any printer installed.
OpenOffice writer seems to have not this feature (important feature i think).
Any suggestions ?
Thanks |

A US Letter is just not the same size as an A4. OOo can easily change the page size but it seems almost certain to make changes in the layout of text and graphics. I cannot imagine that MS Word is any different. _________________ jrkrideau

Thanks,
i need to change the page size automatically, not with manual operation, in order to avoid the error message on the network printer. When i send a bad format page to the printer, it stops to work ! What can i do ?
Very many thanks !!
Bye from Italy |

Read the printer manual? As someone suggeted earlier there may be someway of manually overridding the OOo settings but I have not had any success with that, though I was not trying it with OOo. I know it's not much help but it's an unusual request. _________________ jrkrideau

You are not alone. My UK friend and I have been trying to find a way to change the default paper & format to A4, too. I did not see your post until today. So far we have had no luck either. We are looking for a Linux (PCLOS) solution.
This is a link to my post: http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=69059
I hope one of us has luck.

| I am using HP Photosmart 6280 All-in-One. I don't know which my UK friend is using. In fact, my UK friend does installs for many friends so various printers would be involved. |

Looking at some of the replies after I made mine, please indulge this suggestion: Have the Library's IT Administrator set-up a "selection" of printers for the Printing Patrons to choose. IOW, (assuming using Windows here) "install" a printer that automatically selects Letter paper from the appropriate tray and call it "Letter Printer", "install" another one that automatically selects "A4" paper and call it "A4 Printer" and so on.
In this way, all the "printing Patron" has to do is choose the "appropriate printer" from the drop-down printer select box of the "File, Print" option.
Does this make any sense? _________________ I'm making perfect sense - you're just not keeping up! |

| This is interesting... I live in "US Letter" land and my OO keeps trying to format and print everything as A4! Hoping someone can figure out how to get OO printer settings to stick. I keep forgetting to reset it before printing each time (which causes my printer to not be happy)... |
