I am trying to escape from MS (Win98, Office XP) to Red Hat Linux 9, and find that the file conversion utility in Open Office Writer seems to be unable to handle somewhat complicated documents, in my case, legal briefs of 30+ pages that have footnotes and use MS Word's automatically generated table of contents and tables of authorities. I have saved a test brief in MS Word to MS Word 2002, MS Word 6.0/95, MS Word 97-2002 and 6.0/95, and RTF formats, and tried to convert each using OO Writer on Linux 9. For MS Word 2002, the converter hangs up and I have to kill it or reboot. For the other formats, conversion completes and the converted file can be opened in OO Writer, but upon any navigation within the document, OO Writer freezes and I have to kill it or reboot. I can see enough, however, to know that the tables are converting after a fashion with lots of formatting errors, which I can kind of live with, if only I could work with the document.
This kind of conversion problem is bound to be an issue for any law practice contemplating Linux and Open Office. It may have already been solved. Any information, referrals or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU
