This seems like such a simple question but I just can't find the answer. 
How do I set the program (Writer) to display the single page in the center of the program window? Now the page is displayed to the left side of the program window. I'd like to move it to the center.
I had this working on another install of OO but cannot make the new install display like the old one.
Can someone give me a quick hint? Thanks.

Install the most recent version - 2.3.1.

Note: 3.0.0 beta breaks the fix. Writer documents are now left-aligned again.

Correct. If somebody's text pane is left aligned, maybe his/her installation is corrupt.
