First of all, there's no JRE installed, so why didn't OOo give me a warning?
Then I started using. I've been a long time OOo 2.2 user and use it to type in Chinese, and this problem only occurs on the JRE-less computer. I have all the fonts for the document. The problem is, as I type characters, some don't show up, so I keep on typing that character over and over, and suddenly EVERY character that "disappeared" now reappear. And as I keep tying, they just disappear randomly.

Another problem exists in both JRE and non-JRE computers. When I apply formats (underline, striking, etc.), some are not correctly displayed, some are not applied at all.

I'm really scared that the info in my previous documents would disappear too. My question is:

1. Any known bugs here?
2. If I SAW the characters with my own eyes, and press the save button, would it disappear behind my back? Would it be modified at all behind my back?
3. This question is similar to question number 2: If I had finished working on page 2, and went back to page 1, when I worked on page 1, would page 2 be secretly modified behind my back?

Critical info is at risk. Please answer, thanks a ton!

2.2.1
Win XP SP2
no JRE

i believe it's a bug, but not sure if it's related to JRE. Should I install JRE?

I'm planning to get the latest version of OOo too. Will the documents be compatible between 2.2.1 and the latest?

FYI I'm still using OOo (it's been three years) but I will switch to Microsoft soon if this problem can't be solved.

Thx. Very Happy

As far as I know you do not need Java for Writer but I don't do Chinese. I would check to see if you have the same fonts on both computers.

All documents are compatible between 2.2.1 and 2.4.1.

I do have all the fonts on both computers.

I found a new bug that may have something to do with the aforementioned bugs.

Note: two chinese characters are missing from the "toobar " but visible from the document itself.

I can make those two characters reappear by deleting the first character:

I can also insert a SPACE between the first and second character, then it will display normally. Here's the screenshot:

ok, I think everything in this thread now makes more sense to you. Could you please tell me what's going on? Is it really possible that such a serious bug exists?[img][/img]

(the previous reply was edited, and now contains two pictures)

Notepad++ has a similar bug too. When you enter some combination of certain Chinese characters, it won't display correctly.

I guess the developers would never find out these bugs, not enough Chinese testers!
Maybe I should use the CHINESE version of OOo instead?? (but I have a feeling that it won't solve the problems either)

I have no idea what's happening. It certanly is weird. If no one else can explain what is happening you may want to submit a bug report http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/project_issues.html

I just did some research on Chinese websites. Many Chinese users say that OOo has "serious compatibility problems with Chinese". I'm sorry I'll have to switch to other softwares.

The data isn't lost. It's just invisible. If you copy the whole document to Microsoft Word or Excel, evreything should work fine.

If it's inconvenient to switch, you can also try changing the font for EVERY OOo document. The aforementioned problems appears to be solved after I changed the font.
