When I installed Ubuntu in February 2008, OpenOffice was included. I have not noticed any updates. The current version is 2.4. I updated to Ubuntu Hardy Heron when it was released and keep all updates current.

I recently updated my Windows computers to OOo 4.0 and want to get this one to match. But ... there is no Check For Updates link on the Help menu, and there is no Online Updates option on the Options menu. I checked on the Windows version and see that option right under the Java settings, but Java is the end of the list on the Ubuntu version.

Since I'm pretty much out to sea with Ubuntu, I don't know how to go about downloading and installing from the web...

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Maybe this will help you:

I will say that the process of installing OOo 3.0 on Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is a lot simpler:

In general, within a release, Ubuntu won't upgrade to new versions of software except for security updates. Generally speaking, if you want the newest version of the software, you need to go to the newest version of Ubuntu. Unfortunately, OOo3 was released just a few days before Ubuntu 8.10, so it isn't included by default, either.
