A friend of mine has XP (home) with Access installed on two computers.

He has a large database (over one million records) that he can open in Access on both his laptop and home computer with no problem.

However, we cannot get the huge database file to open in OOorg BASE. During import a progress screen pops up and all goes well until it reaches 100%. Then Base will just sit there for hours on end during which time it hogs all resources and effectively locks up the computer(s). Power off is the only way to shut it down.

Question 1: When importing an Access database file, is there a restriction on the file size?

The link below (from the FAQ's) should help us as far as importing the database, but I just don't want to put any more effort into this until I know whether or not the size of the database is a problem.

I should mention that the database in question is a public records database that was purchased from the Secretary of State's office in our state. The Secretary of State has locked the file. It is read only, no changes can be made to it.

Question 2: Could the internal lock be part of the problem?

Also, there is a macro somewhere in the database. My friend can't find his "key" so we cannot view field contents.

Question 3: Could the macro be part of the problem?

B.T.W. I copied the file to a cd and tried to open it in OOorg BASE on my linux machine - same exact results. Sits there for hours after reaching 100%, but at least I can shut it down without rebooting.

Thanks,

Mike Zulkoski

P.S. I know you are wondering, "If the file can be opened with Access, why bother with OOorg Base?"

Answer (and I don't and won't get into a "Windows VS Linux" debate here):

My friend has had it with Windows and I am moving him over to Mandriva Linux at his request. Everything went great until we ran into this database problem. Obviously, it's a problem opening the file in OOorg Base and has nothing to do with switching to Linux, so don't start!

It hangs because OOo base use HSQLDB and it runs in memory, if your data reach memory size it hangs, and with such size database needs to be in memory when do any tasks, and it is slow. best thing import your database to MySQL or Postgres database, and use Base as front end to query and creating reports..

I don't believe that HSQL is involved by any means when you link Access data by means of ADO, ODBC or something. You definitively run into memory trouble when you use Base to copy data into a newly created HSQLDB.
