I have a table and am trying to get it to number like the following.
Code:

1.  Main item
1.1  Sub item 1.  This is the first sub item.  All sub items will align as this
one does at the line wrap
    1.2 Sub Item 2
    1.3  Sub item 3
1.3.1  Sub of Sub item 3
           1.3.2  Sub 2 of Sub Item 3
    1.4  Sub Item 4
2.  Main Item 2
   2.1  Sub item
.
.
10.  Main Item 10

I am not much a word processor type and I have play with this too long now. Can I get it to number like this? I need to stress that each of these lines is in a different row on the table. I think if each Main item and all of its sub items where in the same row then I could get it to work how I want, but I want these on rows by themselves so that they are surrounded by lines for easy reading.

Thanks for any info on this.
Scott

Hi
What you want is simple. Just use the predefined heading styles in the table and switch on outline numbering.

How to?

1. Press F11 to open the styles
2. make your table.
3. Type the first heading (you can in fact type all headings jsut leave the numbers off).
4. Apply "heading 1" to your first level heading (Main item), apply heading 2 to the second level heading (Sub item 1), apply "heading 2" to the second level heading (Sub item 2) etc.
You apply by having your cursor in your heading item and then double click the Style in the style pallete.

5. Once you have marked all headings this way go on the menu to tools> Outline Numbering and select the numbering for each heading.

Voila your entries in the table are numbered correctly.

Note you can edit the heading styles to your liking by right clicking on the style and chose modify.

Hope that helps.

I have try that with my oooWriter and I think the result I got might be something you are looking for, Give it a try and let me know if that work for you.

1. Create a list (with number
2. Create a sub list (now you might see all your sublist still list that as 1.
1. something here
1. something here
1.something here
3.Highlight the bullet,
4.Select Format bullets and Numbering
5.Select outline (play around the outline setting till it fit your need)

Here is the list that I got with my steps above, good luck

    1 Main item
      1.1 sub item 1
        1.1.1 tiny item 1
        1.1.2 tiny item 2
        1.1.3 tiny item 3

      1.2 sub item 2

        1.2.1 tiny item 1
        1.2.2 tiny item 2
        1.2.3 tiny item 3

      1.3 sub item 3

        1.3.1 tiny item 1
        1.3.2 tiny item 2
        1.3.3 tiny item 3

Still not getting this to work.

As I said, it works fine if it is not in a table or if all the information for the main heading is in one row, but when I start putting each item on a row by itself then it always numbers the rows the same.

i.e.

1 main
1 sub
1 sub2

If I was to tab on the next row then it would lable it as:
1.1 sub-sub2

It would also label the next row of the table the same if I tabbe in it:
1.1 sub2-sub2

I am guessing that this does not work with a table like I want unless I just misunderstood what Fundi was talking about.

Thanks.

I should add more here. When I tried what Fundi said, the menu switched when I made a table. I hit F11 and saw the styles which contained heading1-heading10. When I made the table, that box changed and there were no heading1-heading10 listed anymore.

thanks.

What you have shown is a numbered outline, not a table. Tables are used to organize data in rows and columns. Is that what you want to do?

Yes, but I want all the rows numbered like the above example. Here is an example of what I am trying to do.

Thanks.

Hi

Sorry what was missing on my solution was to tell the cursor is in a table and the Styles selection is set to Automatic the style display switches to the ones OOo finds relevant to a table. Set the Style selector at the bottom of the styles window to all styles and you can select the heading styles even in a table.

Hope that helps.

Fundi,
That works, but that is having to do it manual. I was thinking that I could just highlight all the rows and preset them to bullets/numbering with the correct numbering that I wanted and then all I would have to do is get on the row and either just start typing for a Main heading (i.e. 1.) or tab once for a secondary heading (i.e. 1.1) or tab twice for a tertiary heading (i.e. 1.1.1). That is how it works if I do numbering without a table, but it does not work that way in the table.

Thanks for the help though, I am definitely learning a bit more about word processing. Smile

It works for me. I selected the first column of a table, applied the Numbering 1 list style to the column, then used Format > Bullets and Numbering to set the numbering options. This numbered the first cell in each row at level 1. Clicking in a cell in the first column and pressing TAB demoted the numbering to level 2 and adjusted numbering below that cell.

Okay, not sure what I was doing wrong the first time, but now it works. I think it was selecting the 'numbering 1' on the column. I don't think I did that the first time. I think I just selected the bullets/numbering and selected the option that I wanted.

Thanks for all the help.
