I've been using the OOv2.4 successfully with little or no problems apart from the usual new program finger troubles.
V3 was announced. So I uninstalled V2.4 and then installed 00v3.
Strange unexpected closures happened When I tried to call existing odt files from the menus, the writer simply disappears no message. Or at times I get the document recovery window. But that says unable to recover.
Yet clicking on the file itself starts up openoffice v3 as normal. Some times I got a clue like unexpected closure of visualc++. So I thought it might be damaged ( as far as I can see it is OK)
I uninstalled oov3 and reinstalled V2.4- Things are back to normal and writer is working smoothly . Ah, now there is no unexpected end message from the visual c++ Has anyone else experienced some of the above with oov3?

Hi, sounds a lot like a corrupt installation. I have none of the problems you mention.
In cases like this it helps if you add what OS you have - Windows, Linux, or still something else. _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista

Answering Your points:
System details:-
WinXP Pro SP2
CPU Intel core duo E6750@ 2.66GHz ;
Memory 2GB DIMM
Memory usage with OoV2.4 running writer about 36%
Reinstalled with a new Oo V3 download. Same mysterious closures
I'm Pleased to say that version 2.4 is reinstalled and working fine.
Just a little doubt:
One crash indicated unexpected closure of Visual C++. .
As such I have never installed Visual C++, but...
I DO have installed for programming
C++ and assembler for PICs
I deduce that the visual c++ in the error message must be part of XPpro. ,
also..... is this integrated C++ something that can be updated or tweaked?
Bye

I have installed four editions of version 3.0 at work on four different XP machines.
None of them exhibit the problems you are encountering, or any particular problem.
Note, I did not manually uninstall version 2.4. During the installation of 3.0, the installation program asks if I wish to uninstall 3.0. At that point, I told the program to uninstall it. I believe this dialog occurred the first time I opened Writer.
Basically, the idea is that OpenOffice.org 3 will copy over various settings from version 2.4, and then uninstall it. It is possible that somehow uninstalling first is causing your problems, though I really don’t think so. It seems more like to have been a corrupt install. |

Thank you all and I have read and tried the steps you have recommended.
My free memory in all situations ( as indicated by the task manager) never drops below 1.5GB so I feel this is not lack of RAM
The error message I get when the program 00V3 crashes and shuts down is
***
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library
Runtime error!
The applicatuion has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information"
***
Out of curiosity I looked through posts on the MS forums but strangely no one seemed to be complaining about problems when installing open office. I wonder why? )
So summing up I have downoaded again V3 and installed.
No problems up to here. I get the nice new graphic presentation
Open office, selecting Open a document, sometimes it does, othertimes it doesn't.
There is another top left hand menu open file, it seems to work more often.
Doing it the other way round, clicking on the odt document, causes instant disappearance, a bit like Mr Spock being telported in StarTrek.
So I don't think carring on with this is worth the candle.
I'm going back to V2.4 It may be well be a quirk in my LEGAL win XP pro, but I wouldn't like to try a clean install of it at this moment.
So, I'll write and tell you what happens when I install oov3.7 in Windows 7
Bye and thanks to all of you.

PS my windows system is in Spanish but I don't think that affects anything, or does it? |

Fred,
Sounds like you may be suffering from the same problem that plagued me for some time.
Like you, Ooo 2.4 installed and working perfectly, upgraded to 3.0 and it would crash when opening existing documents. If I started Writer or Calc - it would vanish on the first attempt but would start on the second.
I back rev'd to 2.4 at it work perfectly. Went forward to 3.0 and it crashed all over again.
I came to the conclusion that it was probably a corrupt profile. There was a thread on this that I found about 2 weeks ago - of course now that I need it again, I can't find it. However, it did reference this site
http://katana.oooninja.com/w/openoffice.org/troubleshooting.
Things that you will lose if you delete the profile include templates and custom dictionary so you may want to back it up before hand and see what you can recover later.
Regards

When you have problems with a corrupt profile it's recommended to rename the profile folder so OOo makes a new one. You can then move any stuff that works from your old profile folder to the new one. _________________ LibreOffice 3.6.3; OOo 3.4.1 on Windows Vista
