Suppose I have a list of items, and I put spaces between each item by pressing Enter and inserting a carriage return. The list looks like this:

item1

item2

item3

item4

item5

If I select this group of text and click the icon in the toolbar to turn on numbering, I get a result like this:

1. item1
2.
3. item2
4.
5. item3
6.
7. item4
8.
9. item5

The blank lines receive a number. Considering the way the list was typed in the first place, is there any way to prevent the blank lines from receiving a number? I'm not really interested in the myriad of ways to prevent this from happening in the first place. I'm aware. I want to know whether, based on the way the list was typed in the first place, there's any way to prevent the blank lines from receiving a number.

It's very unlikely that OOo, or any word processor, will keep track of the history of a document when it executes users' commands, except when undoing edits.
I have learned over time that machines like computers tend to do what you order them to do, which is not necessarily what you want them to do. Every time I teach a kid mathematics I have to tell that if he uses a calculator, he has to type 2/(1 + 1) instead of 2/1 + 1, because what's intuitively clear to a human may not be clear to the calculator or computer. You will have to learn the rules that OOo applies when numbering paragraphs, then you won't get into trouble anymore. So, realise that the computer is dumb, it can't guess what you mean. You on the other hand are smart, you can learn to find out how the computer interprets your orders, and prevent that it misinterprets them. At the end of the day you want to get your work done, you don't want to be the victim of malfunctioning software.

Use Ctrl+Enter for your blank line then Enter to go to the next paragraph or use a paragraph style with space under the paragraph and only tap Enter once.
