arrow key not working in OO3

I just installed OO3 on Linux Slackware 11, and noticed that the arrow keys (left and right) when used together with shift are not working as expected. The cursor doesn't move anywhere, I would expect it to highlight/select the text when moving.
Also, the up and down keys are not working as expected. Instead of moving to the line above/below, it moves the current paragraph up and down - re-assigning the keyboard definitions in tools/customize/keyboard has no effect. How do I fix this?
