Format Merge Field in MS Word 2003

I have an MS Access database that I use to send data to MS Word 2003 for mail merge. There is a text field called CHARGE that is comprised of all numbers or is alpha numeric - e.g., 21B-2009-01234 or 440-2009-01234. I have been unsuccessful in formatting field to have hyphens in MS Word 2003. I am either entering the incorrect "switch" in MS Word or it is a task that MS Word cannot perform.

If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
