Hi,

When unmerging a merged cell, the data of the merged cell is transferred to only one cell. I have to manually copy the data in every unmerged cells Sad

Need help to either to automate this (some macros) or some way out as there are thousands of such merged cells which I need to unmerge.

Thanks

Merging of cells is just a "cosmetical" feature, for instance to group label-cells visibly. It just asks you how to deal with existing data which would be hidden. This additional feature moves all contents into the first cell with an additional space between the previous values. You can also decide to hide all merged contents and show only the content of the first cell.
Merging is not designed to concatenate or organize your data. This is done by the concatenation operator "&" or function CONCATENATE.

Thanks for the reply.

But the issue is not to concatenate or organize the data.

I want the data to be copied in all the unmerged cell while unmerging. I have a file with merged cells. I need to upload the data in the data base row wise. This is why I need this data to be unmerged and copied in the corresponding unmerged cells.

I tried writing a macro, but the cell address is absolute. So it always runs on the same cell.

I also tried to use relative cell address, but that too did not work.

Unmerge, copy the value, select the blank cells and paste.
Or unmerge, Edit>Fill>Down (copies top row down)
Or unmerge, select the first cell and Ctrl+Drag the cell-handle.

A macro suite to perform frequently requested Drag&Drop-operations (without actually using drag&drop): http://ooomacros.org/user.php#188206

One set of macros lets you select a range and fill all blank cells with their (left/right/upper/lower) precedents.

New column X, merges in A.
X1: =$A1
X2: =IF(ISBLANK($A2);$X1;$A2)
(repeat the preceeding value if this row's value in A is blank)

Hi Villeroy,

Thanks again for your help.

I tried the solution provided by you but that too did not work. But I managed to complete this activity manually.

Thanks for your support.
