Sorry to be so dense, but having downloaded the zipped libwpd file, what do I do now? I tried extracting the files from the zipped file to the filter file, but oo1.1.1 still won't open wpd files for me.

If I understand correctly, libwpd is a library file which could be used perhaps by another program you develop. For OpenOffice.org in particular, there is a self-installing WPD library (availabe from the same site as libwpd) called WriterPerfect.
