Font Shadow in 3.1

An ODP presentation that works just fine in version 3.0 now exhibits this problem in 3.1.
In a text box (title, outline or text) the characters have a shadow. When I go to edit the text - the shadow disappears but then returns when completing the edit. When an intentional shadow is applied, the shadow gets a second shadow. It also shows up in the slideshow.

I tried this on a completely different system with the same results.
Building a new presentation seems to work just fine. The problem only appears with previous OOo or PowerPoint presentations that are opened or inserted. This seems to happen randomly - one slide will have the problem and the next will be ok.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I would revert back to 3.0 but there seems to be a lot of good stuff in 3.1.
