I created a file about a year ago, and password protected it because it contained personal information. now i have come to need this information and cannot remember my password. is there any way to find it or override it?

If you saved it in .odt format, your chances are, I'm afraid, about zero.

somebody said something about "manifest.xml" but i cant find it

You can rename the .odt file to .zip, then open it with a program like winzip, then you can extract the files in the archive. I can't remember if manifest.xml is one of the files in the archive, but you can try. I'm not sure if it will help you though.

No. This topic has been discussed a lot in OOo forums. Always with the same result: If you cannot provide the password, you cannot open the document. That's what password protection is for.

Last resort: Try a brute force attack to get the password. More on this for example in this thread http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=25791&highlight=brute+force+attack+macro+dictionary or this article http://www.linux.com/archive/articles/61635. But be aware that I've got no idea if either of these are still working with OOo 3.x. I never tried anything of this myself.
