When we create a document in Writer and save it as DOC format. When reopened after some time / days the entire format is changed. This is observed most of the times.
Can any one help to resolve this issue

Thanks and rgds

That is normal. When you save in a "foreign" format, you get a warning of potential loss (which is mostly a loss of design/layout, but may also be a loss of content!). If you still select to use that storage format, you must accept that loss. As far as Word vs. Writer goes, much of the differences are due to different handling of some document elements (notably page formats, styles, and tables). Where a function is missing from one format, it must be substituted with the "nearest match" (which may be a combination of several functions), which is not always a 1:1 match. When this kind of "imperfect translating" back and forth is done a few times, it may in some cases introduce considerable "formatting garbage".

If you must work with MS Office file formats, the most reliable tools are found in the MS Office suite, which is available for MS Windows and Apple OS-X. Do not insist on using OOo if your business suffers from it!
If the entities you collaborate with (customers, etc.) are a fairly stable group, the best approach might be to suggest that they install Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office, and then you can use the ODF formats exclusively. There may still be some layout issues, but in my (somewhat limited) experience the issues are not nearly as bad as when working in the MS formats.

What OS and version of OOo are you using?
What version of Word?
What is actually changing?
